About

This is a full stack svelte-django project for odering pizza online. The backend uses PostgreSQL as database. This is not meant for production, but it demonstrates how to set up a basic order app. The admin page has statistics on how many times each ingredient has been ordered. In a real setting, the data can be further processed for market analysis.

(do note that "graphene" alone is a closely-related package. You need graphene-django to make a scheme and set up an API.)

UML

A very simple UML model for pizza is provided. Essentially, for one pizza, you choose one shape, one sauce, some topping and some seasoning.

Note that, conversely, each ingredient will (likely) appear in multiple pizza. This is not as obvious as it seems. Most often we think the pizza we ordered has an indepedent existence with any other pizza. The issue here is confusion of instance vs class. Although each pizza is separate and indepedent, they are always made of a small set of ingredients.

I have set up a read-only user so that you can login the admin page and have a look inside.

This account cannot modify anything, not even make an order. Note that the timezone is set to Japan. So if you just made an order, the time will likely be different from your local time.

Technical commentary

  • A database is meaningless for a singleton. But under Django framework, it is the easiest way to implment a site-wide setting that allows modifications.
  • Svelte. I had a quick glance at the features Svelte provide. I am quite familiar with React and I feel like Svelte has integrated some of my favourite React frameworks, such as MobX, Framer Motion into native features. State management is notorious in React. Hopefully this is handled better in Svelte.
  • Graphene-django framework for GraphQL API. There is now layer upon layer of abstraction. The django model is an abstraction over database. The graphene schema is an abstraction over django model. But at least these two are necessary. The first allows construction of database without dependence on the specific database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite etc.). The second allows us to selectively expose some field that will participate in API processes.
  • When modelling database, instead of trying to mimic real-world behaviour, it might be better to design it such that it behaves how you want. In other words, keep some distance between real world and the database. Trying to establish a one-to-one correspondence between database and real world most often result in squaring a circle.
  • I deleted some migration and cache and now django does not know the state of the database. I fixed it by manually filter out tables django need to add and tables that already exist. I guess Django want total control over the database and circumventing it will end badly.
  • Installed URQL for Svelte and configured Vite. I am starting to think that GraphQL should not need to be manullay configured, considering how popular it is. Installed CORS for django for HTTP POST.
  • With Tailwind, Svelte and raw CSS. There is many ways to animate DOM elements. Pseudo-class (:hover, :focus) is restricted because CSS is afterall not a programming language. Some framework-based animations are great, but no framework can ever do all what you want to do. I have found that the most versatile approach is to use JS to control CSS values and then apply the CSS by class. This approach offers the most flexibility and does not necessarily depend on any framework.
  • In the database, I have deliberately maintained some flexibility in fields by not enforcing non-negative integers. I am of the opinion that one should not assume more than what he knows. And in this case, I really do not know if there are situations price would be set to negative, for example as a promotion or discount. Therefore, I do not restrict price and some other fields to be >= 0.
  • In Django, a ForeignKey can model a "has a" or "belong to" relation. It is essentially a mant-to-one relation, unless you specify unique.
  • Django has many layers of abstraction to separate concerns. The model is controls the database and acts as the source of truth. The form and view are responsible for the form, i.e. the what and how data can be changed. It is the MVC model. Do note that you don't need to use form and view if you intend to use a frontend framework to handle everything.
